Dual Language Immersion is a way to learn academic content while acquiring another language at the same time. Students receive math, science, or social studies instruction in a target language, such as Spanish, French, or Chinese. Because of the teaching strategies used, the students learn the concepts and skills for the subject area and develop the ability to read, write, speak, and listen in another language.
The Utah Dual Language Immersion program is a general education program which allows open access to all students, including students with disabilities, those who are academically delayed, and English language learners. There is neither a qualifying process nor any prerequisites to apply to a program. The goal of dual immersion is to create inclusive classrooms where all learners can thrive academically and linguistically.
(Please note: West Kearns Elementary offers a Gifted Dual Language Immersion program designed for students who qualify for the district’s gifted services. However, all Granite School District students are welcome to participate in Dual Language Immersion programs at other schools throughout the district.)
The goals are for the students to develop literacy skills in both English and the target world language such as Spanish, French, or Chinese while attaining academic achievement that is at or above their grade level as measured by Utah core testing.
Furthermore students will develop a world cultural sensitivity. We strive to prepare Granite School District students academically, linguistically and socially for the challenges and needs of our global community.
The Dual Language Immersion program in Granite School District begins in first grade and students continue to take courses in the target language through graduation, with a goal of college and career readiness in two languages. For an overview of the courses at each grade level, please see the Dual Language Immersion Course Overview (PDF).

Participation in a dual language immersion program is considered to be a comprehensive educational experience. Beginning in kindergarten or first grade, paired English and target language teachers collaborate to support student mastery of both the core content standards and target language skills in a full day program. It is our expectation that students who participate in the language immersion experience participate fully in the school academic day and its prescribed instructional design.
