Canvas: ‘The Fundamental Five’ for Students and Parents

The “Fundemental Five” are simple but essential questions students should ask as they navigate content and coursework their teachers have shared with them in Canvas. (Canvas is the learning management system used by students and teachers in Granite secondary schools to support both face-to-face and distance learning.)

Kami (https://www.kamiapp.com/) is a tool that allows students to digitally annotate text and edit documents. Using the kid-friendly Chrome extension, students can make notes on ebooks, publisher-supplied PDFs, worksheets, and more. Granite recently purchased a district-wide license to Kami for all teachers and students!

Instructure recently released the Canvas Parent app for iOS and Android devices. This app allows parents to easily view details about their students’ courses from mobile devices. Teacher Spotlight: Jody Lynn Tolley, Skyline High

Jody Lynn Tolley teaches American Sign Language at Skyline High School, and is a member of the first cohort in the Educational Technology Endorsement Program. In this spotlight Ms. Tolley describes how having Chromebooks in her classroom has opened many new ways for her students to learn about ASL and Deaf culture. She also speaks to the value of the Canvas learning management system in keeping students up to speed when they miss her class, as well as giving them valuable skills that enable them to succeed in navigating future college classes.

Digital Conversion Spotlight: Student Communication

In the lead-up to next year’s Digital Conversion implementation, we will be featuring spotlights and discussions from teachers and students who participated in pilot classroom Chromebook programs during the 2014-15 school year. In today’s video, teachers discuss how email, Canvas, and cloud-based collaborative tools such as Google Drive/Google Docs and classroom Chromebooks have enabled students to more easily and more readily contact teachers with questions and comments, receive more immediate feedback and answers from teachers, as well as communicate with each other with questions and ideas relative to their learning.
