Featured Resource: The National Archives

February 2019Josh Whiting

Post Author: Jessica Moody, Library Media Educational Technology Specialist, Olympus Jr. High School

The National Archives Educator Resources page is a great resource for K-12 teachers.

DocsTeach is a repository of lesson plans, graphic organizers, and Primary Sources Documents focusing on American History. You can browse or search by time period, topic, activity type, or grade level. The graphic organizers are simple and fun. The Interpreting Data exercises are a great way to link History, Analysis, and even some math skills such as reading graphs and charts. All DocsTeach lessons align with Bloom’s taxonomy and the National History Standards. Follow @DocsTeach on Twitter to see highlights of new additions and interesting documents from the National Archives that relate to the National History Standards.

Be sure to subscribe to the US National Archives YouTube Channel for a variety of videos and professional development.  If you look at their Playlists, their videos are organized by topics and interests.  You can even find professional development for teachers. Be sure to use the search option on their channel page to search for specific videos for your next lesson. In their Uploads stream you can see a few of their upcoming live streams that will be posted soon. The Illusions of Emancipation will be posting on February 27th, 2019. This video will deal with the slow process of ending slavery in America.

The National Archives also feature apps, ebooks, warm up activities, and political cartoons to assist you.  This is a great place to find bell ringers and more in-depth lessons.  The eBooks are free and are in PDF format so that they are easily accessible.

The Online Exhibits are a great way to host a virtual field trip. There are many topics including Art History, History, World Geography, Science & Technology, and even When Nixon Met Elvis.

Of course, there is much more to be found. What will you find?

Teacher Spotlight: Julia Bossi, Granite Park Jr. High

The students in Julia Bossi’s art classes at Granite Park Junior High learn not only how to create beautiful pieces of art, they also learn research skills and use Cornell note-taking strategies to record and organize the information they learn. Ms. Bossi teaches the students that artists research new techniques to inform their art-making practice, and she has the students do the same.  [Read more…] about Research on Chromebooks and Note-Taking in Art Class?

Utah’s Online Library, formerly known as Pioneer Online Library, was officially renamed and re-branded on February 29, 2016.

The new URL for the K-12 edition of the library is: http://onlinelibrary.uen.org/

The new URL for the consortium of online libraries (College, K-12, Preschool, and Public) is: http://utahsonlinelibrary.org/

(The old URLs for Pioneer Library do still work and forward to the new sites, but please update links on classroom and library websites to the URLs above to avoid eventual dead links.)

Utah’s Online Library provides access to newspaper articles, magazines, professional journals, periodicals, encyclopedia content, animation, audio, videos, photographs, maps, charts, graphics, and more. It is an Internet resource that your student can access wherever he or she can access the Internet – at school, at the local public library, at home, or anywhere.

To access Utah’s Online Library at home or elsewhere outside of a school network, you will need to know a simple login username and password. You can obtain this login in one of the following ways:

  • Visit http://onlinelibrary.uen.org while on a school network. The home access login is displayed on the main page.
  • Ask a member of the library or technology staff at your school for the current home login information.
  • Call the Educational Technology department at 385-646-4110 and ask for the login information.
  • Email a Granite district media or technology specialist for this information.
  • Contact Utah Education Network  (UEN) at resources@uen.org or 1-800-866-5852.
